Sean Logue entered the mortgage business around one of the worst possible times: the financial crisis. Nearly two decades later, he’s an Executive Vice President at CrossCountry Mortgage and a nationally recognized mortgage originator.
For Episode 13, I wanted to get past the surface-level mortgage conversation and talk about what Sean has actually watched change—from the aftermath of Lehman Brothers to loan-level pricing adjustments, regulation, condo financing, and the decisions that helped shape his career.
Sean currently leads CrossCountry Mortgage’s Philadelphia branch and continues to originate loans himself. That combination gives him an interesting perspective: he’s experienced the industry as a producer, a leader, and someone who has had to adapt his business through multiple versions of the mortgage market.
In this episode, we get into:
How Sean found his way into mortgages after college
What it was like building a career as the financial crisis unfolded
The early failures that forced him to figure out the business
How he eventually became a nationally recognized producer
Why mortgage rates are more complicated than the number consumers see
What loan-level price adjustments actually do
The 2023 pricing changes that created so much conversation inside real estate
Where risk-based pricing and regulation intersect
What Sean thinks could change next in mortgage regulation
How condo financing requirements have evolved
Where regulation protects consumers—and where unintended consequences can appear
What years of producing at a high level have taught him about consistency
The personal habits and perspective behind his definition of success
What I like about Sean’s perspective is that it wasn’t formed during one type of market.
He entered the business around the financial crisis, built through the regulatory environment that followed, and is still originating today. That gives us a chance to look at mortgage lending through the eyes of someone who has actually had to operate through those changes rather than simply analyze them from the outside.
And because Sean is also my boss, I naturally had to start the episode by giving him an opportunity to publicly critique my job performance.
That went about as well as you’d expect.
If you work in real estate, mortgages, or simply want to understand why financing works the way it does today, there’s a lot to unpack in this conversation.
