The physics of sound made visible.
The cap of water is attached to small platform on a vibrating speaker.
Coloured light is reflected from above.
What we are seeing here is the reflected light on the waters surface.
Once vibrating, it creates waves on the surface of the water, as peaks and troughs.
The peaks and troughs of the water reflect the light differently, so through this we can see where and how the waves are moving.
The waves move out from the centre, hit the edge, and then reflect back in on itself again.
The points of interference of these waves is what creates the symmetrical peaks and troughs on the waters surface.
Different frequencies have different wavelengths.
So, the points where the waves intersect are different and that is what creates a different pattern.
