0:00 Born into post-war Britain 3:14 The Britain outside the window 5:13 Cold homes, polio and the arrival of television 9:59 The freedom of an unwatched childhood 13:19 The other Britain: racism and inequality 15:17 The cup, the mountain and the exam 19:35 New money, youth culture and a country in crisis 28:03 The long hangover and the generation that carried both Britains Come with me through one British life that begins beside a coal fire and ends at the seam between two completely different countries. I follow the child born in 1958 from the NHS and the Big Freeze through polio fears, black-and-white television, unsupervised childhood, the eleven-plus, the moon landing and the extra year at school. Then I trace the journey into the three-day week, the heatwave of 1976, unemployment, strikes, Thatcher's Britain and the changing cost of a home. This is not just a timeline of events. I want to show what it felt like to remember the old Britain while living through the arrival of a new one.
