America’s military power is often measured in aircraft carriers, fighter jets, troops and defence spending. But behind all of it is something much harder to see: geography. The United States sits between two enormous oceans, possesses immense continental depth, and has built a network of alliances, ports, airfields and strategic access points stretching across the globe. From Hawaii and Guam to Japan, South Korea and Europe, geography helps explain how American military power can operate thousands of miles from the continental United States. In this The Power Archive documentary, we examine the hidden geographic system behind America's global military reach — and why maintaining that system is becoming increasingly difficult. We explore the importance of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, overseas bases, allied territory, aircraft carriers, logistics networks, island chains and strategic military hubs that allow American forces to move across enormous distances. But geography creates vulnerabilities as well as advantages. Long supply lines can be disrupted. Overseas bases can become targets. Strategic islands can become increasingly important. And as military technology changes, the distances that once protected American power can also complicate its ability to project that power abroad. America's global military strength isn't simply about how many weapons it possesses. It's about where those weapons can go, how quickly they can get there, and whether the geographic network supporting them can survive a major crisis. 🔔 Subscribe to The Power Archive for documentaries exploring geopolitics, military strategy, global power, geography and the hidden systems shaping international affairs. 💬 Which location do you think matters most to America's global military strategy — Europe, Guam, Japan, Hawaii, or somewhere else?
