Twenty thousand years ago, much of what is now the Java Sea and the shallow seas of Southeast Asia was dry land.
This vast prehistoric landscape is known today as Sundaland. During the last Ice Age, global sea levels were more than one hundred meters lower than today, connecting the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and enormous areas that are now hidden beneath the ocean.
In this calming long-form history documentary from Origins After Dark, journey back into the lost world of Ice Age Southeast Asia. Follow ancient rivers that now lie beneath the sea, explore forests and open landscapes once crossed by prehistoric animals, and discover how Homo sapiens lived across a world whose geography was completely different from the map we know today.
This is not a story about Atlantis or an imaginary advanced civilization. Sundaland was a real Pleistocene landscape inhabited by humans and animals for thousands of years.
As the Ice Age ended, glaciers melted and global sea levels rose. Slowly, coastlines moved inland. River valleys became estuaries. Plains became shallow seas. Ancient land routes disappeared beneath the water, separating populations and transforming one enormous connected world into the islands of Southeast Asia.
What happened to the people who lived there?
How did rising seas change migration, survival, and human connections?
And how much prehistoric history may still remain hidden beneath the waters of Southeast Asia?
Relax, close your eyes, and travel deep into the human past with this atmospheric History for Sleep documentary.
