CH6 EP5 “Moron-ing Around” Crunch. Snow compressed beneath J’s feet as she dragged the worker towards herself. The cold had grown sharper. Wind swept between the buildings with a low, hollow whoooosh, carrying loose snow across the pavement and scattering it around their feet. J stopped. Her gaze lowered. Three long marks crossed the front of the visor. Not random. Deliberate. J tilted her head. Simple. I'd been hungry. That much was obvious. But… Why had I done it like that? Her eyes lingered for another moment. Then a small smirk appeared. Interesting. Very interesting. She straightened. She had to find me. Not because she was worried. Obviously. She simply wanted answers. I had always been terrible at hiding things. One question… Then another… And eventually I'd ramble myself into explaining everything. Probably without even noticing. J glanced towards the darkness. Nothing. Only drifting snow and distant streetlamps. Where had I gone? She couldn't shake the feeling that I was somewhere nearby. Watching. V's voice suddenly came from behind her. “You forgot I was here too?” J blinked. She turned. V stood there with the most unimpressed expression imaginable. J stared at her. Then sighed. “No.” “Sure looked like it.” “I was looking around.” “For the tenth time in five minutes?” J's brow twitched. “I don't remember this quarter of the environment particularly well.” V stared. J stared back. “I had to get accustomed to it.” “Whatever you say.” V's grin widened. She deliberately copied J's own unimpressed expression, cocking her head to one side. J narrowed her eyes. The wind rushed between them. 𝘞𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘩… Snowflakes brushed against their frames. For a moment, neither spoke. Then V glanced down. She nudged one of the abandoned chassis halves with her foot. “I'm picking the best place for this awesome arrangement.” J looked down. Her expression tightened. Only slightly. Then she smiled. “I'm sure you will.” “See? You trust me.” “That's not what I said.” “Close enough.” V grinned. J looked away. “Let's keep looking.” V's smile faded into curiosity. “More?” J didn't answer immediately. Her gaze drifted towards the street again. V noticed. That was strange. J was usually all about getting things done quickly. Efficient. Return to the Corpse House. No wasted time. And yet… She was still looking. V's eyes narrowed. Why did she suddenly want to stay? She remembered the blast. Her head regenerating. Me standing there… trying to help her. And then J appearing from behind me. J had followed me. Later, she'd claimed she'd only done it to find V. That made sense. Mostly. But now… J was doing it again. Searching. Watching. Looking as though she expected something to reveal itself. V tilted her head. What are you actually looking for? J finally moved. “Let's keep looking.” V stared at her. Again? They'd already found three bodies. That was more than enough for a quick investigation. And yet J seemed almost reluctant to leave. V's grin faded into something more thoughtful. She glanced towards the darkness. Nothing. No familiar silhouette. I hadn't followed them. They hadn't seen me since the blast. So why did J keep checking? The wind swept through the street, scattering snow around their feet. J's silver pigtails swayed with it. She started walking. V watched her for another second. Then sighed. “Fine.” She grabbed the two halves of the worker and followed. But this time… she stayed behind J. Watching. Not the bodies. Not the snow. Her. Because something about this sudden change in behaviour… was beginning to bother her. And J looked like she already knew exactly what she was searching for. She knew that look. J was thinking again. Always thinking. Always several steps ahead. And now she was deliberately keeping herself between V and whatever she was actually interested in. V's eyes narrowed. What's she hiding? J began walking. No hesitation. V followed. The snow crunched beneath them. One step. Then another. The warm streetlamps gradually disappeared behind them as they entered another stretch of darkness. V's confidence slipped. Only a little. She glanced over her shoulder. Nothing. Just snow. Buildings. Dark windows. She looked forward again. J was still walking. Still dragging the two workers. One heavier than the other. V studied every movement. The angle of J's shoulders. The tiny turns of her head. Every pause. Every glance. Especially those. She deliberately stayed behind her. J probably thought she was simply following. That was fine. Let her think that.
