"Can You Sit at the Head of the Table Tonight?" He Asked the Hired Girl—In Front of His Whole Crew
On a Tuesday in late October, Nora Voss stepped off the Laramie stage into Caldwell Flats, Wyoming, with one canvas satchel and a letter of reference that had already been declined.
Gerald Halverson told her from his half-open office door, loud enough for six people on Main Street to hear, that the boarding house wanted someone younger for twelve men and three meals a day.
Clem Reardon, a widower with a quarter section six miles east, hired her for his two children and four hands. Within six weeks, Dorcas Pell was hinting from the millinery door that it was convenient to have a woman in the house, and Halverson arrived to end an eight-year grazing arrangement on the adjoining land, looking at Nora as he said it. At the Grange hall supper, he stood before the whole town with his paperwork and made the same point again.
Nora had fixed nothing with her voice. She had kept fourteen places filled with food that men remembered from their mothers' kitchens, and a stove that ran hot on one side had never once burned a supper past the second try. Clem stood in that hall and said she owed no one an explanation for being good at her work.
Skill does not argue its case. It sets the table and lets the room reach its own conclusion.
The next night, Clem asked her to sit at the head of the table, and she did.
