Learn the concepts of Sthaayi or octave in carnatic music

Dr. Nagamani Srinath elucidates on the concepts of sthaayi or octaves. In carnatic music 3 sthaayis are defined viz. Madhya Sthaayi, Mandhra sthaayi and thaara sthaayi. 1) Madhya sthaayi - The seven notes from aadhaara shadja in ascending order is called madhya sthaayi. 2) Mandhra sthaayi - The seven notes from aadhaara shadja in descending order is called mandhra sthaayi. The dot below the swara indicates mandhra sthaayi. 3) Thaara sthaayi - The seven notes from madhya sthaayi nishaada in ascending order is called thaara sthaayi. The dot above the swara indicates thaara sthaayi. Apart from the three, there are anumandra, athi thaara sthaayi also defined which does not find normal usage.
