NEBRASKA 1969 Cold Case Solved — He Confessed on a Phone Call, Then Walked Free at 78
This video tells the story of Mary Kay Heese, a 17-year-old high school student who disappeared from Wahoo, Nebraska, on March 25, 1969, after being seen entering a two-tone white-and-blue Chevrolet with two men. Her body was found the next morning in a roadside ditch, and despite footprints, tire tracks, witness statements, and early suspicion surrounding Joseph Ambroz and Wayne Greaser, the case remained unsolved for more than five decades. Years later, retired detective Ted Green reopened the investigation and discovered that crucial evidence had been scattered across multiple agencies in eighteen separate volumes that had never been reviewed together. His investigation again focused on Ambroz, whose car, shoe size, employment history, access to a skinning knife, and former wife’s withdrawn alibi all became important pieces of the case. In 2024, Ambroz was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after a grand jury heard new testimony and evidence, including claims that his former wife had secretly recorded a phone call in which he appeared to refer to “the girl I killed in Wahoo.” However, DNA recovered from Mary Kay’s clothing did not match Ambroz, creating a major contradiction. In 2025, Ambroz accepted a no-contest plea to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and received the maximum sentence allowed under 1969 Nebraska law: two years. With good-time credit and time already served, he was released at age 78 less than a year after his arrest. The case may be legally closed, but for Mary Kay’s family, the unanswered questions remain.
