Draṣṭā-Dṛśya-Vilaya — The Dissolution of the Observer and the Observed
*An original Sanskrit contemplative recitation inspired by Advaita Vedānta and the philosophical inquiry of J. Krishnamurti.*
Who is the observer? Can there be perception without the psychological centre from which we habitually look at the world? And what remains when the division between the observer and the observed is questioned?
This composition brings two philosophical inquiries into dialogue.
The traditional Sanskrit text Dṛg-Dṛśya-Viveka investigates the relationship between the seer, the seen and the Witness. J. Krishnamurti, approaching a related question from a radically different direction, challenges the psychological division between the observer and the observed.
The aim is not to modernise Vedānta, nor to dress Krishnamurti in ancient robes. It is to let two inquiries meet, reveal their differences, and leave the listener with a question that neither doctrine nor music can answer on their behalf.
The Sanskrit verses, original lyrical passages and modern adaptation are brought together in a new musical composition. The work does not claim that Krishnamurti's teaching and classical Advaita Vedānta are identical. Their differences are part of the inquiry itself.
Sources and acknowledgements
*Dṛg-Dṛśya-Viveka*, traditionally attributed to Bhāratī Tīrtha: selected Sanskrit verses concerning the seer and the seen.
J. Krishnamurti: philosophical talks and reflections on the observer and the observed. The modern lyrical passage is an adaptation, not a quotation or a verbatim transcript.
The selected traditional verses retain their classical provenance. Newly composed Sanskrit passages and adapted material are identified as modern creative work.
