Re-Panning a Photo

When shooting a pan of a moving car there is always a limit to how much of it can be kept sharp in the final image. This is because different parts of the car are taking different routes and traveling at different speeds relative to the camera. For example, imagine a side on pan of a car starting when the front weeks are level with the camera and ending when the back wheels are level. During the exposure the front wheels will always be getting further from the camera while the back wheels are approaching and this causes them to blur. The amount of blurring is dependent on the length of the exposure and the motion of the car relative to the camera - a car circling the camera would show no blur. This video is a test of a method to be able to change what part of the car is in focus after the shot and uses a combination of shooting method and post processing. In this example, of a 1 second pan of Debbie Dunbar at Loton Park hillclimb, the point of interest is moved from the front wheel to the drivers helmet and back.
