“Maybe I Dream Too Much” was written by my friend Alan, and if I remember correctly, I believe he originally wrote it for his wife. We used to play this one together down in my basement, usually with the two guitars doing most of the talking. I always tried to bring a slightly different flavor to my lead parts—something vaguely Spanish or Mexican, maybe a little wandering minstrel-like. I’ve never really known what to call it. I just tend to reach for notes and phrases that are a little less obvious and try to make the guitar part my own. Even though this version was recreated with the help of AI, I think some of that original character still comes through. That’s always my goal with these recordings: not to reinvent the songs, but to preserve as much of the personality and feeling of the original performances as possible. The recording this version grew from was made in my basement on a TASCAM 2488MKII, a standalone 24-track, 24-bit recording workstation. It may look a little dated now, but at the time it was a wonderful machine. You weren’t tied to a computer—you could set it up wherever you wanted, hit record, and just play. And that’s basically what we did. In fact, we were apparently so guitar-centric that night that I think we forgot an entire verse. We got caught up in the interplay between the rhythm and lead guitars and somehow ended up repeating the chorus three times instead. I suppose that says something about where our priorities were. But I actually like that about the recording. It captures two people enjoying themselves and becoming absorbed in the music rather than worrying about making everything perfect. The song also came to mean something personal to me. Around that same period I had met the woman who would eventually become my wife, so some of the lyrics began to resonate with me in a different way—especially the simple line, “And I adore you.” I always put a lot of heart into the lead guitar on this one. It’s a beautiful little love song, and one I’m very happy to have had the chance to play. Lyrics: It seems that I've been coming here, For so long a time Just to be with you The heartache and the pain drives me out of my mind Until I'm near you Hold me close, don't send me away Because I need you The magic of true love is that It must work both ways And I adore you Maybe I dream too much About the two of us It might be dangerous To be in love like this Not every broken heart Finds its counterpart We'll make a brand new start Somewhere along the way Maybe I dream too much About the two of us It might be dangerous To be in love like this Not every broken heart Finds its counterpart We'll make a brand new start Somewhere along the way Maybe I dream too much About the two of us It might be dangerous To be in love like this Not every broken heart Finds its counterpart We'll make a brand new start Somewhere along the way
