On November 20, 1980, a Texaco drill punched into a salt mine under Lake Peigneur, Louisiana, and the whole lake vanished in about three hours. A whirlpool a quarter mile wide swallowed two oil rigs, a tugboat, a string of barges and about 65 acres of land, and a canal that normally flows to the Gulf ran backwards for two days.
All 51 people in the mine got out alive. But federal investigators never figured out who was to blame. This is the story rebuilt from the original federal report.
