Every Person Who Accused God of Being Unfair — And How God Answered Them Is God fair? The Bible records people asking that question more often than many realize. Job could not understand why a righteous person suffered while the wicked prospered. Jeremiah asked why treacherous people lived comfortably. Habakkuk demanded to know why God seemed silent while violence continued. Asaph nearly lost his faith when he saw the prosperity of the wicked. But others had a very different complaint. Jonah became angry because God showed mercy to Nineveh. Israel accused God’s way of being unfair. And in Jesus’ parable of the vineyard workers, people complained because the master seemed too generous to those who arrived last. So what happens when human beings put God’s justice on trial? In this video, we explore some of the Bible’s hardest questions about suffering, justice, mercy, judgment, and why evil sometimes appears to win. The Bible does not give every person the same answer. Sometimes the answer is to wait. Sometimes it is that we cannot see the whole story. Sometimes the accusation exposes envy, anger, or hypocrisy. And sometimes Scripture allows the painful question to remain while calling the believer to trust God before seeing the ending. From Job and the prophets to the teachings of Jesus and Romans 9, these stories reveal why the question “Is God fair?” is far more complicated than it first appears. And sometimes, when humans put God’s justice on trial, God begins asking questions too.
