What happens when Jesus is important to us, but He isn’t actually at the center? In Colossians 1:15–23, Paul gives us a breathtaking picture of who Jesus is. He is the image of the invisible God, the Creator of all things, the One who holds everything together, the Head of the Church, and the One who deserves first place in everything. But Paul doesn’t stop with who Jesus is. He reminds us what Jesus has done. The One who created everything went to the cross for His creation. The One who holds everything together allowed Himself to be broken for us so that we could be reconciled to God. Jesus doesn’t want to simply have a place in our lives. He wants first place in everything. And maybe that’s exactly what some of us need to hear today: our job was never to hold everything together. Jesus holds it together for us.
