Every August the ice on Roopkund melts for a few weeks and several hundred skulls show through the water. Skeleton Lake is the second of five unsolved medieval mysteries in this history documentary, and the sources argue about every one. The first is Erik Klipping, king of Denmark, stabbed 56 times in a church barn in 1286. After the lake come the Erdstall tunnels under Bavaria and Austria, then the Genoese Vivaldi brothers, who rowed past Gibraltar in 1291 and vanished, and last the murder of Wenceslas III of Bohemia at 16, whose assassin was killed before he could speak.
