Experience a peaceful and mysterious blend of soft hand drums, natural rattles, airy wooden flute, subtle low strings, gentle orchestral swells, spacious celestial ambience, wind and distant birds. Expressive female vocals, warm communal harmonies and restrained mixed choir gradually rise from quiet stillness into a broad emotional chorus, reflecting a world suspended between earth and the heavens.
“The World Above the Clouds” explores Sky World — the celestial realm that stands at the beginning of one of the most important creation traditions preserved among the Haudenosaunee, also historically known as the Iroquois Confederacy.
The Story Behind Sky World:
Long before the land known today existed, the story begins in another realm.
High above the endless waters below was Sky World, a vast inhabited world in the heavens. It was not simply an empty sky or distant paradise. In Haudenosaunee creation traditions, Sky World was a living realm inhabited by powerful beings and often described as a place filled with plants, animals and a great sacred tree.
Different nations, communities and storytellers preserve variations of the account, but one of its central events concerns a woman who would later become known in English as Sky Woman.
According to many versions of the story, an opening appeared in Sky World near the great tree. Sky Woman fell through that opening and descended toward the enormous waters beneath the celestial realm.
Below her there was no continent.
There was only water.
As she fell, birds saw her coming from above. They gathered beneath her and helped slow her descent, carrying her toward the surface. The water animals then searched for a place where she could survive.
A great turtle offered its back.
But there was still no soil upon it.
One by one, animals dove deep beneath the waters in an attempt to reach the earth below. Several failed. In many tellings, a small muskrat finally returned carrying a tiny amount of soil.
That handful of earth was placed upon the turtle's back.
From something almost insignificant, the land began to grow.
The soil expanded beneath Sky Woman until it became a vast world — the beginning of the land often referred to in later English retellings as Turtle Island.
Sky World therefore represents far more than a distant heavenly kingdom. It is the first home, the realm from which the transformation of the world below begins. The descent from the sky connects the celestial world, the waters, the animals and the emerging earth into a single creation story.
The story also carries an important idea: the world is not created through conquest.
It emerges through cooperation.
Birds protect the falling woman. The turtle provides a foundation. The animals risk themselves searching for soil. Even the smallest successful act becomes the beginning of an entire world.
Sky World remains above, while a new world grows beneath it.
Two realms become connected by one extraordinary descent — a journey from the world above the clouds toward the beginning of life upon the earth.
