At what point does a friendship stop being a friendship?
I’ve had friendships that lasted 20 years. Others lasted 7 or 8. Others 4 or 5. And now, in my 40s, I find myself with a much smaller circle—and asking myself a question I didn’t expect to have to ask:
Am I getting worse at friendship, or am I getting better at recognizing when something isn’t friendship?
In this first episode of LOLA SAYS, I’m talking about friendship, trust, reciprocity, confidence, boundaries, intuition, admiration, imitation, and what happens when you realize a relationship wasn’t what you thought it was.
I’m also sharing a personal experience that changed the way I look at friendships—and ultimately made me question whether I’ve become more discerning or simply more guarded.
We’ll talk about:
• Why some long-term friendships still aren’t healthy friendships
• The difference between intimacy and reciprocity
• When admiration starts to feel like imitation
• Confidence and comparison in friendships
• Boundaries vs. expectations vs. standards
• Trusting your intuition
• What happens when a friendship ends and the other person tries to come back
• And the question I’m still asking myself: Can protecting yourself become a reason you stop letting people in?
Plus, a little spiritual reflection along the way.
This isn’t about telling you who was right or wrong.
It’s me thinking out loud, telling my story, asking uncomfortable questions, and inviting you to think about your own.
This is LOLA SAYS| From My Mic.
