Michael Vanthourenhout and Cameron Mason collide at the Superprestige Noordzeecross in Middelkerke, and the cyclo-cross race ends with a crash, a shouted confrontation after the finish line and a 200 Swiss franc fine.
This is the full story of a November evening on the Belgian coast, the first ever night race in Middelkerke, raced under floodlights on a course made greasy by sea air. Vanthourenhout arrived as Superprestige series leader with four wins from seven races and a podium in every one of them, but on lap eight Cameron Mason, the Scottish rider and four-time British champion, came up on his inside just before a sandy passage and a short climb. A shoulder, a wobble, a rider down: the Belgian slipped on the wet surface, dropped from the fight for the win to sixth, and fought back to finish second behind Joran Wyseure.
What happened after the chequered flag is the part nobody expected. Instead of rolling away, Vanthourenhout walked straight at Mason, shouted in his face and threw a light punch, an exchange caught on the broadcast before Eurosport's coverage was abruptly cut. The commissaires confirmed a fine of 200 Swiss francs, roughly 218 euros, and it was not for the shoulder contact during the race, which was a legal move, but for the outburst after it.
We go through the tactics lap by lap, the seven riders still together at the front, the barriers that took Mason down, Wyseure's own mistakes at the balance beam, and the frantic final lap that left Kevin Kuhn third, Mason fourth and Jente Michels fifth. We also look at how both riders handled it afterwards: Vanthourenhout's honest post-race interview admitting adrenaline got the better of him, and Mason's dry Instagram story reply that said everything without saying anything.
Finally, we look ahead to the European Cyclocross Championships in Zeddam, three days later, where Vanthourenhout chases a third continental title and Mason tries to reach the medals, with the memory of Middelkerke still fresh between them.
If you follow the Superprestige, the cyclocross World Cup or the Belgian winter season, this is the incident that defined the week.
