Rene C. Rivas, Financial Advisor at Merrill & GovState Alumnus

Meet Rene Rivas ’16, a Governors State University College of Business alumnus, financial advisor, mentor, and member of the GovState Alumni Advisory Board. As a first-generation Mexican American, Rene reflects on the sacrifices and resilience of those who came before him and the importance of honoring the leaders who create opportunities for future generations. Throughout his journey, he has learned that challenges can become opportunities to adapt, grow, and ultimately make a greater impact in the lives of others. For Rene, accomplishment is about more than overcoming obstacles, it is about using what you learn along the way to uplift and guide others. That commitment continues through his work as a financial advisor and his involvement with students, alumni, and the broader community. His advice to current and future students is simple but powerful: live with intention. Set goals for yourself academically, professionally, and personally, revisit them often, and make sure your daily choices reflect your values and the person you hope to become. Rene’s story is a reminder that our experiences, heritage, and challenges can all become part of the value we bring to others.
