Josh Smith on Playing AAU for the Atlanta Celtics & The State of Today’s AAU Climate

Josh Smith breaks down how he played AAU for the Atlanta Celtics (Stone Mountain Knights) in 8th grade and why today’s AAU climate is completely different. He shares the story of being told he was “too short” by Coach Prather before a championship game against a team featuring Zach Randolph and others. Smith responded by dunking on Randolph, blocking shots, and dropping around 30 & 15 to win it all — that performance became his real tryout. He then gets into how the game has changed: kids with agents at 16-17, no more earning your spot, ego-stroking over development, Instagram clips vs. real production, and why adversity still matters if you want to actually make it.
