CORRECTION — 6 September 2026
This video is incomplete. It tells the story as though the sub-unit began on Hyoyeon's YouTube channel in 2024. It did not. Fans had already built and named the same three-member line-up — S.H.Y., from Hyoyeon, Sooyoung and Yuri's initials — and Sooyoung posted the three of them together as SHY in July 2016, captioned "TaeTiSeo, be worried". The gap this video misses is about fifteen years.
@Punkadelic2112 pointed this out in the comments and was right. We rebuilt the story with the decade put back in:
• Girls' Generation's New Unit Is 15 Years O...
We are leaving this video up rather than deleting it, with the correction attached.
— — —
Yesterday evening at 6pm KST, Girls' Generation released a single by a unit that did not exist two years ago — and the unit did not start in a meeting room at SM Entertainment. It started on Hyoyeon's own YouTube channel.
THE UNIT
Girls' Generation-HRS: Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung. The name is just their names — Hyo from Hyoyeon, Ri from Kwon Yu-ri, Soo from Sooyoung. In Korean it reads HyoRiSoo. It is the third subunit in Girls' Generation's history.
Two songs. The title track "Skibidi" is built on Arabian string sounds over hip-hop; the B-side "Lowkey In Love" is dance-pop.
WHERE IT CAME FROM
Hyoyeon runs a comedy series on her own channel called Fake Kim Hyoyeon. In one run of videos, the three of them competed against each other for the positions you would assign in an actual group — main vocalist, main dancer, centre. A joke, between three women who have been idols since 2007.
On 24 September 2025, Hyoyeon posted a video pitching it properly, as a unit, on her own channel. Eleven months later SM Entertainment released it as a single.
And they did not wait for the release to perform it: on 22 August, nine days early, all three performed both songs live at the CassCool Festival in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province.
WHAT WE DO NOT SAY
There is a very satisfying sentence available here — that SM greenlit this because of the YouTube videos — and nobody has reported it. SM has not described the decision, has not said what persuaded them, and has not called this a strategy. What is documented is a sequence: the videos existed, the pitch video exists with a date on it, and the unit exists now. A sequence is not a cause, and we say so on air rather than letting the shape of it do the arguing.
THE PATTERN UNDERNEATH
In June the Korea Times named self-produced content as a strategy in Korean music — not a novelty, a strategy. Its lead example was not a legacy group but RESCENE, who debuted in 2024 out of Muze Entertainment. Their leader Woni posts to her own channel, averaging around two million views a video; one run pushed the group from 300,000 to 650,000 subscribers in ten days, and a set of videos about her regional dialect and home town did 10.7 million views combined. Muze described the aim as letting the members' charms come through naturally, "through a different approach" than the official channels — the official channels being the thing worked around, by the company that owns them.
Pop music critic Kim Do-heon put the appeal simply: the trend is to show each member's natural, free-spirited charm and authenticity.
THE HONEST LIMIT
There is a way of telling this that goes "idols are taking control back from their labels," and that is not what the evidence shows. Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung are nineteen years into a career at the top of the industry, at the company that built them, with a personal audience that existed before the pitch. A trainee with the same idea and no channel does not get a single. The accurate claim is narrower: a named, established artist can now build the case for a project in public, and the company can watch the case being made before it decides. That is a real change. It is not the same as power moving.
WHAT WOULD CHANGE HOW THIS READS
If SM ever describes the decision in terms of the channel. If a second unit at SM, HYBE, JYP or YG comes out of a member's own content within the year. And — the one to watch for — if a group with no established name does it, out of a small company, and it works.
