Solitude (ஏகாந்தம்)

Set against the aftermath of Sri Lanka’s long war, Solitude (ஏகாந்தம்) follows an elderly couple living alone in Jaffna after their children have migrated overseas for safety and a better future. Their children continue to care for them from afar through cameras, phone calls, and hired helpers, yet loneliness remains their constant companion. When the husband suddenly dies, the elderly woman is left completely alone. Her daughter in Switzerland invites her to come and live with her, opening the door to a new chapter in her life. The central dramatic conflict of Solitude lies in the elderly woman’s struggle to rebuild her life in a new country without losing the cultural roots that have shaped her identity. After years of war, family separation, migration, and bereavement, she leaves Jaffna and enters a world shaped by a different climate, language, technology, family structure, and way of life. The move offers safety, companionship, and the possibility of a new beginning, but it also raises a deeper question: how can she adapt to a new world without becoming disconnected from the traditions, memories, food, habits, and values that connect her to home?
