Five clips and two screws. That is all that held the cellular box inside one 2024 Honda Civic Type R, and its owner lifted it out by hand.
From 2020 to 2024, Honda shared driving data from about 97,000 cars with the data broker Verisk and was paid $25,920. Senators Ron Wyden and Edward Markey put that at 26 cents a car. The data came from Driver Feedback, an opt-in program in the HondaLink app. The senators say the disclosure naming Verisk was buried in the legal terms. Honda disputes that, saying no identifiable customer information reached an insurer without a second opt-in. Verisk shut down its driver scoring product in April 2024, and Driver Feedback ended that May.
The program ended, but the box that carried the data is still in the car. This documentary walks through the Senate record, Honda's own Vehicle Data Privacy Notice, and one reporter's attempt to switch data sharing off on the day she bought her Honda. Then it covers the three ways owners are shutting it down: the setting on the screen, the deactivation call Honda's notice describes, and the telematics control unit itself, with the honest trade-offs of each.
Hardware covered: the 2024 Civic Type R, from one owner's documented removal, and the 2023 Accord, where Honda's own Service Bulletin 23-056 places the unit under the center speaker lid. No Honda owner premium increase is claimed in this video, because none was found on the record.
