DOMINICA ADVENTURE | Jaco Flats | Hiking a Hidden Piece of Caribbean History!

Deep in the heart of Dominica’s rainforest lies one of the Caribbean’s most powerful and untold stories. Jaco Flats is the site of a Maroon encampment of escaped slaves from the 1700s, named after a runaway slave called Jaco who found refuge here. This hike really lets you see, touch, and experience a part of Dominica’s history the important refuge it served for escaped slaves from other Caribbean islands. And after walking the steps and reflecting on the village of Maroons that once lived there, you descend from the mountain and wade and swim back through one of the most beautiful rivers you’ll ever experience. The trail is about 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of 652 ft, taking roughly 11.5 hours to complete.
