Liamy McNally relates the formation of Covie Week at the Tea, Cake and Poetry session of Covey Week 25, in Blowsers Pub, Westport. 30.7.25. ---------- Covie Convention TRIBUTES were paid at last week's meeting of the Council to the organisers of the recent week-long 'Covie Convention’, held in Westport. Cathaoirleach, Margaret Adams, said the week had been an outstanding success and more than 100 people had travelled from overseas specifically to be there and were then joined by so many others from around the country. She thanked organisers, Martin Curry and Liamy McNally, for their efforts. Cllr. Sean Staunton said he could not believe how successful the week had been and how interested people were in the celebrations. "People came from overseas and natives of this county travelled to be here and they all had great pride in their native place ."The one concern I would have about such a convention is that non-natives might wonder a little bit about it. However, that concern was so well catered for through the expressions of celebration of Westport by people who live in the community. I also wish to congratulate the two organisers for a job well done. Martin Curry and Liamy McNally." Cllr. Tereasa McGuire: "It's that sense of place. Sometimes we are not very good at celebrating our place but this is what the Covie Convention is all about. It's an important event in the own and I hope it will be repeated. "Cllr. Martin Keane: "It was a great gathering of people from all over the world and they were delighted to be here in Westport. Your speech, Cathaoirleach, was received very positively at the opening ceremony in the Wyatt Hotel. Cllr. Ollie Gannon: "I wish to congratulate those involved on what turned out to be an excellent event which was greatly appreciated. It meant so much to the people who came here." Cllr. Declan Dever: "I also wish to be associated with the congratulations. I would like to see this event go from strength to strength. It is going to be even better next year." Cllr. Brendan Mulroy: "In the sense of the history of Westport, a lot of things people might have been unclear about were put right by people who were here for the week and could put a clear picture on what really happened." Cllr. Margaret Adams, Cathaoirleach, noted that there had been an application to the council for financial assistance for the event next year. She wished to endorse the application. Councillors agreed that funding should be given. The matter is to be decided now by the council executive. (Mayo News 6.8.2003) ---------
