What does it mean to “unlearn neurotypicality,” and how can it change the way we understand ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence?
In this conversation, William Schroeder, LPC, and Evan Sadler, LCSW, explore neurodiversity, masking, shame, and the pressure to fit into traditional ideas of how people “should” think, behave, work, and communicate. They discuss why different brains can have different needs and why a diagnosis alone does not always explain what a person actually needs.
The conversation includes a practical exercise where they intentionally create uncomfortable silence and notice their reactions. This leads to a deeper discussion about the pressure to fill silence, appear attentive, stay productive, and behave according to neurotypical expectations.
They also talk about ADHD-related experiences such as time blindness, distraction, sensory needs, internal processing, and difficulty with organization. A major theme throughout the discussion is neurodivergent shame—the feeling that something is wrong with you when you struggle to meet expectations.
William and Evan also explore how people can replace shame with self-awareness, intentionality, compassion, and practical strategies. They discuss the importance of identifying personal values instead of simply trying to become “normal” or more productive.
The episode closes with reflections on therapy, EMDR, self-acceptance, and learning to work with different parts of ourselves rather than fighting against them.
