Observation vs inpatient status can be confusing because spending the night in a hospital does not automatically mean you’ve been admitted as an inpatient. In this video, I explain how hospital observation status works, why it can matter for Medicare, and what patients and caregivers should ask before discharge.
You’ll learn:
• The difference between inpatient and observation status
• Why staying overnight does not automatically make you an inpatient
• How Original Medicare generally handles inpatient hospital care versus outpatient observation care
• Why observation days may matter if skilled nursing facility care is being considered after the hospital
• What Medicare’s Two-Midnight Rule means in practical terms
• What the Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice, or MOON, means
• What the Medicare Change of Status Notice, or MCSN, means if your status is changed
• The most important questions to ask before leaving the hospital
One of the biggest takeaways is not to determine hospital status by where someone is staying, how many nights they’ve been there, or how much care they’re receiving. Observation is outpatient hospital care, and a patient can receive significant medical care while still technically being an outpatient.
The question to ask is:
“Am I formally admitted as an inpatient, or am I under observation as an outpatient?”
There’s also a question list in the video that you can pause or screenshot and keep handy during a hospitalization or before discharge.
Hey neighbor! I'm Aman Dhillon. I'm a registered nurse who's worked in a lot of different healthcare settings, and here I break down healthcare in plain English.
Save this video or screenshot the question list so you have it if you or someone you care for is ever in the hospital.
