NASA Just Revealed What It Found on Neptune — And It’s Incredible NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has revealed an extraordinary feature on Neptune that astronomers had struggled to directly observe for decades: auroras. Using Webb’s near-infrared instruments, scientists detected bright auroral activity around Neptune for the first time, along with a strong H₃⁺ emission signature produced in the planet’s upper atmosphere. The observations also helped researchers study Neptune’s ionosphere and atmospheric temperature. Webb has also delivered an exceptionally clear infrared view of Neptune’s faint rings, some of which had not been seen clearly since NASA’s Voyager 2 flyby in 1989. The telescope captured atmospheric storms, methane-ice clouds, multiple moons, and subtle details in Neptune’s turbulent atmosphere.
