Brooklyn Bridge NYC Walk - Manhattan to Dumbo [4k] Friday, July 28, 2023 @ 2:00 pm, 35°C / 95°F A summer walk from the Financial District over the Brooklyn Bridge into Dumbo. I am bound to have to turn audio off on this stroll for the number of times I passed by photo booths playing "Empire State of Mind" by Jay Z featuring Alicia Keys. That song had just come out when I first moved to New York, and listening to it blast from people's cars gave me a sense of pride and inspiration; it only took listening to it for what felt like the entire duration of this walk to wipe away any remaining nostalgia I had left for this song. People have to make money I guess, and if that song helps to romanticize the city for tourists and sell photo ops, so bet it. But the city's story can be told in so many different songs. It might be Frank Sinatra's version of "New York, New York", or Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" -- to name a couple popular ones. For me, it was Miles Davis' "Round Midnight" for the longest time. Anyway, I think I maybe should've done this walk going the other direction, based on the number of times I spin around to capture the view of the skyline...! But hopefully you'll still enjoy this walk, and in the comfort of a cool room, out of the summer heat.
