MN-PHNC: Public Health Kratom Impacts and Regulation - September 3rd, 2026

Minnesota Public Health Non-Profit Collaborative Lunch and Learn: Public Health Kratom Impacts and Regulation Kratom is an emerging substance raising new questions and concerns within public health practice. This training is designed to build shared understanding among professionals, partners, and community stakeholders. Participants will learn what kratom is, how it is used, and the potential health risks associated with its consumption. In addition, attendees will gain clarity on current federal, state, and local regulations that govern kratom’s production, sale, and distribution. By the end of the training, participants will be better equipped to recognize the public health implications of kratom and to engage in informed conversations and decision‑making within their communities. Post-webinar additional resource: The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), in collaboration with the Minnesota Medical Association and partner physicians, has released an informational brief on concentrated 7‑hydroxymitragynine (7‑OH) and other kratom products, which are increasingly available in commercial forms such as tablets, gummies, liquids, and “enhanced” or “spiked” kratom products. The brief provides information for clinicians, including: awareness of the DEA’s temporary scheduling of substances related to 7‑OH, information on how concentrated 7‑OH products may produce stronger opioid‑like effects than typical kratom products, and considerations for clinical settings that may encounter patients presenting with intoxication or withdrawal associated with these products. It is intended to support situational awareness and preparedness across Minnesota healthcare settings. Please share across clinical teams.
