One Step Late is a wry 1980s-inspired synth-pop near-miss about two people who keep crossing paths without ever quite arriving at the same moment. A missed train. A supermarket aisle. Six unnecessary lemons. A Thursday rearranged around a watch strap. Lift doors that close just a little too quickly. The song lives in those tiny almost-encounters where coincidence starts to feel suspiciously persistent, but nobody quite has enough courage, timing or evidence to call it fate. “I know you, don’t ask me how, always one step late somehow. Near enough, still too far, same street, wrong time, there you are.” Musically, the track blends British-Nordic 1980s synth-pop with sophisti-pop detail and light Latin-electro syncopation. Crisp Linn-style drums, punchy analogue bass, clipped synth stabs, glassy hooks and fretless-bass responses keep the arrangement bright and precise without washing everything in reverb.
