In the fourth part of the "Expedition to SoCal" series on this channel,    • [6q][4k] Fighting the Desert Grade. Union ...  , we visit the Tehachapi Loop which is a remarkable engineering feat on Union Pacific's Mojave Subdivision. The loop makes a 2% grade toward the summit near Tehachapi, CA possible in narrow and rugged terrain. It was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1874-1876. UP inherited the line that connects the Central Valley with the Mojave Desert in the merger with SP - and BNSF kept the trackage rights that once the Santa Fe used to cross the Tehachapi Mountains. More than 40 UP and BNSF trains run on this rail line every day and this video shows representative samples. Enjoy fascinating rail action at a marvel of American railroad engineering!
