Remnants found on the fort suggest human inhabitants dating back to the Microlithic era, with references to the fort appearing in ancient Puranas such as the Skanda Purana and Matsya Purana. ​Spiritual Heritage: In the 11th century, various caves were carved into the rock face. The heart of the fort features the Harishchandreshwar Temple, a magnificent carved-rock medieval temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, alongside the famous Kedareshwar Cave—housing a massive Shiva Lingam surrounded by waist-deep, ice-cold natural water. Great sages like Changdev are said to have meditated here in the 14th century. ​Strategic Shift of Power: Over the centuries, the fort was controlled by local Koli Mahadev tribes, later fell under the control of the Mughals, and was eventually captured by the Marathas in 1747 before falling to British rule in 1818.
