STRAWBERRY MASTERCLASS – HOW TO GROW IN POTS & BEDS – PLANTING TO HARVEST

I live on the Eastern side of England in an area that would be classed as Zone 8. One fruit I love growing and eating are strawberries, and in addition to growing some outside in a strawberry bed I find growing them in pots in my greenhouse provides earlier pickings. Pot-grown strawberries can also be kept away from hungry birds, especially blackbirds, and the fruits avoid being nibbled by slugs and snails too. As the fruits hang over the sides of pots in the air they ripen and stay healthy, avoiding damage by grey mould (botrytis) and also stay clean as they avoid getting splashed with soil when it rains. In this video I’ll show you how to plant bare-rooted strawberry runners which have been cold-stored so they’ll start growing right away and be in flower within about 60 days. However, you can also find small potted strawberries available in garden centres and nurseries which would be ideal for planting into patio pots, troughs or even hanging baskets. I’ll also show you how I planted up a small strawberry bed in my garden, describing the varieties I chose and how I prepared the soil, tips on controlling weeds, step-by-step planting advice, building a netted frame to stop birds eating my fruit, and much more.
