James Webb Just Saw Proxima Centauri for The First Time - And It's Terrifying

James Webb and Proxima Centauri reveal a far more dangerous world than the “second Earth” headlines suggested. Proxima b may orbit in the habitable zone—but its star is violently active. Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our Sun, just over four light-years away, and its planetary system has fascinated astronomers since the discovery of Proxima b in 2016. Because Proxima b is roughly Earth-mass and orbits within its star’s habitable zone, it was quickly described as one of humanity’s best nearby candidates for a second Earth. But the real science tells a much more complicated story. In 2019, astronomers observed an extraordinary Proxima Centauri flare that erupted dramatically across ultraviolet and millimeter wavelengths. Earlier observations had already revealed an extreme superflare in 2016. For a planet orbiting only a few million kilometers from such an active red dwarf, that stellar behavior could have enormous consequences. In this documentary, we examine what Proxima Centauri’s superflares could mean for Proxima b, including atmospheric erosion, stellar-wind bombardment, radiation exposure, tidal locking, magnetic-field uncertainty, and the possibility that the planet may have lost much of its original atmosphere. We also look at what the James Webb Space Telescope has discovered while studying other rocky planets around red dwarfs, including TRAPPIST-1 b, TRAPPIST-1 c, and GJ 486b—and why those observations are forcing scientists to rethink how common truly habitable worlds might be. And then there is the biggest problem: distance. Even our fastest spacecraft would require tens of thousands of years to reach Proxima Centauri, while futuristic concepts such as Breakthrough Starshot remain limited to tiny robotic probes.
