Why does a battery give almost the same voltage until it is nearly dead? In this video we build the Nernst equation from the basics (redox, the Daniell cell, electrode potentials, the reaction quotient Q and log Q), then watch a Daniell cell run down step by step, all the way to equilibrium where E = 0, ΔrG = 0 and Q = K.
You will learn:
• How a Daniell cell makes electricity
• The Nernst equation and how to use it for a cell: E = E° − (0.059/n) log Q
• Why the voltage hardly changes as the cell runs down
• What happens at equilibrium, and how E° gives the equilibrium constant K
• Where the Nernst equation shows up in real life: your phone's battery bar, a car battery on a cold morning, nerve cells
