Fernando Sor (1778-1839) - Study E minor Op. 29 No. 6 (Estudio Mi menor) Horst Sohm guitar - from the Album "Minuettos y Estudios" (Spain 1986) The Catalan composer Fernando Sor was born in Barcelona and receives his musical education at the nearby Monastery of Montserrat. Unlike most of the guitar composers of the 19th century, Sor was educated to understand and play the music from the basis of poyphonic church music. This may be the reason why, through Sor, the guitar reached one of the great moments in its history. The minuets are little jewels in which, apart from the musical content, allmost all the different techniques of guitar playing are required; purlely melodic playing is interspersed with sequences of harmonies, chords and arpeggios. Polular dances, like the minuet, have been used by Sor in his composition in a stylised form, as by other wellknown composers ot that time. A classic guitarist can work on his dynamics with the Sor minuets. The minuets are particularly suitable for exploring the boundaries between quiet passages (pianisimos) and powerful loud passages (forte). The Etudes (studies) by Sor contain excellent music and have a variety which even though individual pieces are somehow similar in type, never bore. Each has its different character and the musical richness fascinates. At the same time, however, these etudes are also a key to the understanding of Fernando Sor´s technique and his guitar works in their entirety.
