A Ransom for Your Life: Atonement is Not a Payment

Season 2 Episode 31 of the Trauma-Informed Church Kid podcast The family of Abraham has chosen to live with the King of the Universe in their midst, but they remain a people of unclean lips and unclean hands. Do they need to be ransomed from Adonai’s death penalty? Is that what sacrifices are doing? This week, we take a look at the concepts of ransom and/or redemption. We will examine the different kinds of semantic frames which we find in the Scriptures for “ransom”, and discover if any of these are related to sacrifices. We will ponder what it means to give a “ransom for your life”, and if Adonai even accepts those kinds of “bribes”. We will explore the meaning of debt, cost, and payment, and consider how they are the same.. and how they are different.In the end, we will challenge ourselves to look at ransom/redemption differently: as being about a costly deliverance from bondage (not to Adonai), and the cost it takes to “bind” us (back) to Adonai as our Loving Father.
