The Tsushima family is a very important and prestigious one. Dazai's real name is Shūji, but he changed it when he met Mori. Dazai's mother, Tane Tsushima, is the daughter of the former port mafia boss Mori killed, Sōgorō Tsushima, but she always refused to be part of that world, and her father never insisted. At eighteen, she married Eizaburō Matsuki, a name he later changed to Gen'emon Tsushima. A year later, they had their first daughter, Tazu Tsushima, and over the next few years, they had ten more children. Only seventeen years after Tazu's birth did they have Shūji. Shūji is the tenth of Tane and Gen'emon's eleven children. When Shūji was fourteen, he met Mori, as in Bsd, and the story continues as in the original. Shūji decided to change his name at Mori's suggestion and chose "Osamu Dazai". The Tsushima family was told that Shūji had died from a su1c1d3 attempt, and after two years they moved away from Yokohama. Dazai doesn't hate his family, but he prefers for them to continue believing he's dead because he doesn't want the truth about his past to be known and believes it's best for them to have nothing more to do with him. Dazai considers himself his family's disappointment and is convinced that revealing his origins would tarnish the Tsushima name. I hope this is clear; I've tried to explain it as best I could.
