Confusion – ECP (Selway, Encore, Prem, Punish)

“Confusion” takes us back to a time when we were young, finding our feet in life, music and relationships. By this stage, Prem, Selway and I had become close all thanks to Encore introducing us. We were spending almost every day and night together, making music, sharing experiences and navigating our way through young life and love. At the time, all three of us were dealing with our own relationship situations. Different girls, different experiences, but the same feelings of uncertainty, heartbreak and confusion. That’s where this song came from. I wrote the singing hooks, often coming up with melodies on the piano or guitar, while Selway brought everything together with his beat making skills. We recorded this one in the garage at Selways mum’s house in Kotara. Some sessions would go late into the night, sometimes until 2 or 4 in the morning. Encore was always there, directing and supervising the recording sessions, and usually having a laugh at the three of us when we would make mistakes. This was before Soundcloud and Spotify became part of our world. We were burning our music onto CDs, handing them out for free along Newcastle Foreshore and blasting our tracks through the speakers in Selways Toyota Seca. We weren’t chasing numbers, streams or recognition. We were just young fellas who loved making music, creating memories and enjoying life. Looking back, those were some of the best times.
