A water tower with a faded name. A diner that used to fill up at three in the morning for shift change. Past the edge of town, an old chain-link prison fence, overgrown and rusted, running along the tree line, so ordinary now that almost nobody who passes it remembers what it used to guard. That prison did not close quietly into memory. In eight separate corners of New York State, right now, a building just like it is still standing, still fenced, still legally owned by the state that built it, with nobody left inside. That emptiness is not retirement. New York has closed more than twenty state prisons over the past fifteen years, and while a few found new lives as film sets or reentry centers, most still sit exactly where the last inmate left them.
