Two days after my KTM died a few hundred miles from home, I got off the couch, quit feeling sorry for myself, and decided I needed to take the Donkey for a ride. So I pointed it at Israel Canyon, a climb I know well and one of the difficult rides near where I live.
Grades over twenty five percent. Loose shale, rocks, ruts most of the way. The tires were worn, which never shows up on camera, but they were enough. I put the bike on the ground four times.
Partway up, a 4Runner came down the mountain with brakes that were not stopping it. There was no room for us to pass, I got run off my line, and a rider going up needs momentum, so giving that up on a grade like this put me on the ground. I was angry for about a minute. Then I understood what he was dealing with, and he ended up helping me get the bike upright and pushing me out of the worst spot on the mountain.
Higher up, the drone called low battery and flew back to its return to home point before I could get control of it, about two thousand feet down at the bottom of the mountain. I hiked after it. Twenty minutes in, a side by side stopped. They had already found it and set it on the side of the road, so they drove me down to it and then brought me back up to my bike.
Then I rode the rest of the way up and over the top.
I've never been alone, even when I'm alone riding solo. Somebody always shows up and helps me. There's always goodness in people everywhere I go.
The bike is a KLR650, the Donkey.
