I LEFT SONY FOR THE LUMIX S1II - 4 Months Later, Was It Worth It?

I switched from the Sony FX3 and FX30 to the Panasonic Lumix S1II, and after using it for the past 3 months across real-world projects, I wanted to share what I actually think about this camera. This isn't a spec-sheet review. I've used the Lumix S1II for documentaries, travel films, interviews, food films, handheld/run-and-gun shoots and reels — including my entire Kashmir series, which I shot in Open Gate. And after three months of using it, there are a few features that have genuinely changed the way I shoot. The biggest ones for me are Open Gate recording, the incredible range of video codecs and frame rates, V-Log, Dynamic Range Boost and Panasonic's stabilization system. Coming from Sony, I also wanted to see how the S1II's autofocus actually compares to the FX3 and FX30. While Sony still has a slight edge, I've found the S1II's autofocus to be almost at par — and for the way I shoot, autofocus isn't something I rely on heavily anyway. I personally prefer V-Log over S-Log3 for my grading workflow, particularly when it comes to skin tones and how the image responds inside DaVinci Resolve. And then there's stabilization. Combining IBIS, Electronic Stabilization and IBIS-BOOST has allowed me to capture handheld shots that I honestly wouldn't have attempted before. For a cinematographer working with a very small crew — and often without the ability to carry or use a tripod — this has been a massive advantage. ____ My current Lumix S1II setup Camera: Panasonic Lumix S1II (A CAM) LUMIX S5IIX (B CAM) Lenses: Lumix 14-28mm / Lumix 50mm / Samyang 35-150mm Color Grading: DaVinci Resolve Studio After three months, my conclusion is pretty simple: I don't regret leaving Sony. If you're a solo filmmaker, cinematographer or someone working with a small crew, I think the Lumix S1II makes considerably more sense than its spec sheet might suggest.
