In the ancient world that was a small clay lamp carried in the hand. It lit roughly the next step and nothing beyond it. That was the whole design, and it was offered as a comfort. You are not failing at faith because you cannot see the year ahead. You were never given equipment for that. This prayer walks the road in sections. The decision you have been avoiding. The road you did not choose. The stretch that has taken longer than you planned. The detours. The valley. The uphill part where nothing appears to change. The provision, the companions, the wrong turn you already took, and the very end of it. You are not asking God to show you the road. You are asking to walk with the one who has already been down it.
