Huge thanks to Steve from Tobekompleated for providing a declicked needle drop for me
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Reg Dwight and other well-known session musicians worked with budget labels to anonymously cover hit songs. These recordings were quickly pressed and sold for a much cheaper price, often reusing the same songs for multiple compilations. In these, he can be heard contributing lead vocals, backing, harmony, and/or piano, usually with some room for speculation. Even after he changed his name and had received commercial success, Elton returned for a final session in 1970 before fully committing to being a solo artist. In the mid 1990s, the majority of the covers that feature Elton on lead vocals were released on a CD compilation entitled Chartbusters Go Pop!. After the release of this first compilation, reissues appeared with fewer songs on the tracklist. I consider CGP! as the definitive version because it has the most songs on it. I have compiled every anonymous cover that is NOT on CGP! that has Elton's participation and tidied them up to post together in one place. For each one of these uploads, I will include a personnel blurb below this general text saying what Elton is thought to have contributed to this specific recording.
