Sparse, intimate rap tells of a narrator whose failed connection prevents an exam attempt, leaving an engineering dream unresolved while the desire to pursue it remains.

LYRICS
I didn’t ask to pass.
I just wanted the chance
To find out if I could.
I wrote “engineer” beside my name,
Then turned another page.
Stayed until the difficult parts
Were things I could explain.
Some nights the words were blurring.
I’d whisper, “One more time.”
I could almost see a future
That I hoped would become mine.
No one needed to remind me
What that one exam could mean.
I had carried it through months of work
And seen it in my dreams.
I didn’t get a question.
I didn’t get a grade.
Just a page that wouldn’t open
Where I’d hoped to write my name.
All the nights I gave tomorrow,
All the things I’d learned by heart—
I was ready for the hardest part.
I never got to start.
When the morning finally came,
I was frightened, but prepared.
Had the kind of hope that trembles
When the thing you want is there.
Then the connection wouldn’t work.
I kept trying. Watched the time.
At first, I thought, “A minute.”
Then, “Please. Just let me try.”
I knew I couldn’t fix it
By pressing harder on the screen.
But I kept trying anyway,
Like it might understand the need.
I kept trying past the moment
When I knew I’d missed my time.
Still knew everything I’d studied.
Still had nothing I could write.
I didn’t get a question.
I didn’t get a grade.
Just a page that wouldn’t open
Where I’d hoped to write my name.
All the nights I gave tomorrow,
All the things I’d learned by heart—
I was ready for the hardest part.
I never got to start.
How do you tell somebody,
“I missed the test,”
Without it sounding
Like you didn’t do your best?
I had so much to show them.
There was nowhere it could go.
Closed the book.
Sat still.
I don’t know how long.
Now I take the jobs I find.
Keep on trying to get through.
When somebody asks about my dream,
I say, “I’m working on it too.”
Sometimes I find those old notes,
All the questions I worked through.
See the parts I underlined
Because I knew what I could do.
I don’t know if I’d have passed.
That’s the part that hurts to say.
All I wanted was to find out—
Not to wonder every day.
Maybe I’d have struggled.
Maybe I’d have needed help.
But I wanted that result to come
From something I had done myself.
And my story isn’t over.
There’s still more I want to do.
But some nights I’m back that morning,
Begging for the page to come through.
People hear “a missed exam.”
I hear the plans I used to make.
I see the person I was working toward
And the step I couldn’t take.
I didn’t get a question.
I didn’t get a grade.
Just a page that wouldn’t open
Where I’d hoped to write my name.
All the nights I gave tomorrow,
All the things I’d learned by heart—
I was ready for the hardest part.
I never got to start.
I still write “engineer”
Beside my name sometimes.
I haven’t crossed it out.
