In a few days, Pope Leo XIV begins his Apostolic Journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru (November 6–17). In Peru, they don't say the Pope is visiting. They say he is coming home.
This video is a tribute in rare photos and videos to the years Robert Francis Prevost spent in Peru, long before the world knew him as Pope Leo XIV.
He arrived in 1985 as a young Augustinian missionary in Chulucanas, in the region of Piura. He later formed future priests in Trujillo and, in 2014, became Bishop of Chiclayo. In 2015 he became a Peruvian citizen.
The people of Peru remember a bishop who went to the mountain villages on horseback, who waded into the floods of 2017 and of Cyclone Yaku in rubber boots, and who, during COVID, helped build oxygen plants to give free oxygen to families who could not afford it. They still call him Monseñor Roberto.
On the night of his election, May 8, 2025, he greeted only one diocese by name, and he did it in Spanish: his beloved Chiclayo. Now, for the first time as Pope, he goes back.
He was born in Chicago. But in so many ways, he was made in Peru.
