Warner is looking at the future. When Cleveland chose Watson as QB1, Warner admitted he was “a little bit dumbfounded” by the decision. His reasoning was simple. If the Browns eventually expect to move beyond Watson anyway, why spend another season without fully discovering what they have in Sanders? Give the young quarterback meaningful football. Let him compete. Let him make mistakes. Let him develop. And most importantly, collect enough information to make a real decision about the future of the franchise. That is where Cleveland’s current situation becomes complicated. Watson responded to his terrible Jacksonville opener by playing significantly better against Tampa Bay. Cleveland won, Watson protected the football and Todd Monken suddenly had a strong reason to continue with his veteran starter. But one Watson victory does not answer the Shedeur question. Sanders needs repetitions. Quarterbacks develop by seeing NFL defenses, recognizing pressure, making decisions and learning from what happens when everything does not go according to plan. Practice can help. Scout-team work can help. Watching Watson can help. But eventually, a quarterback has to play. And Warner understands that better than almost anybody. His own NFL career is one of the greatest examples of what can happen when a quarterback finally receives a legitimate opportunity. That does not mean Sanders will become another Kurt Warner. Nobody knows exactly what Shedeur’s ceiling is. And that is precisely the point. Cleveland does not know either. The Browns saw progress from Sanders during his first NFL season. General manager Andrew Berry publicly praised his development while also acknowledging that the quarterback position still needed to be solidified. Now Cleveland faces a difficult decision. Continue developing Sanders patiently behind Watson? Or give him enough meaningful football to determine whether he could actually become part of the Browns’ long-term answer? Warner clearly believes finding that answer has enormous value. Because Cleveland could eventually enter another offseason searching for quarterbacks while still wondering what Sanders might have become with a genuine opportunity. That is the danger. Shedeur does not need to be handed anything. He needs an opportunity to prove whether he deserves more. And if Cleveland continues waiting while his developmental years disappear from the calendar, Browns fans may eventually ask the exact same question Kurt Warner has been asking.
