UK’s Biggest GPS Satellite Receiver. Round Baling next to Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope As summer gets closer to autumn we’re starting to bale agri stewardship areas for hay. The material will be lower nutrition than conventional hay made earlier in the season but in a drought year will provide extra feed all be it of a lower quality. We’re baling a small field right next to Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope which makes for some fantastic photos of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today we’re using the John Deere 6R215 with the Kuhn Combi Round Baler. The reason for taking this baler out is to utilise its versatility. We start by showing you how easy it is to switch from making a bale with film binding to baling with net wrap so we can start baling hay for one client. Then when we move to another clients farm we switch back from binding the round bales with net wrap to binding with Kuhn’s film on film system. This makes this type of baler very versatile in being able to switch between different crop types without having to go back to the farm yard to swap machines. With the UK experiencing such a dry summer we look at some fields that were last mown six weeks ago. And see the difference that one field is brown and dead and not recovered due to the drought at all, but the other field with a different grass and forage seed mix has stayed green and produced another light crop of valuable forage in the dry conditions. We question weather we should be looking at alternative seed and forage crop types to give extra resilience to farming if the weather patterns continue to give us hotter drier summers.
